Dr. Sophie Gilbert is an a wildlife ecologist interested how animals respond to their changing environment, including animal behavior, population, and community ecology, as well as linkages between wildlife and humans via their shared environment, including ecosystem services.

She works to incorporate biodiversity and other ecosystem benefits into natural capital markets. For more than 15 years Sophie has advanced the fields of ecology and conservation and worked to support sustainable wildlife populations across Alaska, Canada, and the American West.

She left her tenured faculty position in 2022 and is now leading bio-crediting and helping develop other credit types to better value nature at the Natural Capital Exchange (NCX). .

Before joining NCX, Sophie was an Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Idaho, and worked in environmental consulting at the University of Alaska and the University of Alberta. She earned her B.Sc. from the University of California Los Angeles and her Ph.D. from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She has published nearly 30 peer-reviewed articles on wildlife biology and environmental science.
